Danny Murphy has encouraged Chelsea to prioritise the signing of Harry Kane over Paulo Dybala. The Blues have been heavily linked with the duo recently as Mauricio Pochettino looks to further bolster his attacking options.
Prior to the departure of Fabio Paratici in April, football.london understood that Tottenham had been in contact with the England international's team to discuss a new deal. However, Kane is believed to be in no rush to sign an extension during the transfer window while he assesses what the future holds.
With the Spurs striker expected to seek pastures new, either this summer or next, Manchester United, Chelsea and Bayern Munich have been mooted as potential destinations. But, despite significant interest, Tottenham seem determined to hold onto Kane – even if it means losing him for free once his contract expires next year.
As for Dybala, his €12million (£10.3million) release clause has painted him to be an attractive option for the Blues this summer. However, according to reports from Italy, Roma aren't concerned by Chelsea's interest and they're confident that they can keep him on board for next season .
While Kane and Dybala may both be great signings in their own right, the former is a striker and the latter is more so a playmaker. Speaking to Vibe with Five, Murphy explained why the west Londoners' money would be better spent on the Tottenham captain.
"He’s a quality player, but do they need another player who is a 10, a winger, a striker? They need a striker, they have got them but they need a proper established one. "Kane would do them, not that he’s going to go there. I’m not sure they need it. They need midfielders because Kante has gone, Kovacic has gone, Loftus-Cheek has gone and Mount has gone."
Murphy concluded by outlining his concern with Chelsea's Financial Fair Play situation despite having already raked in €220.8million (£188.9m) in just player sales this summer . The former Fulham and Liverpool midfielder said:
"Depending on Financial Fair Play, I think Chelsea want to be prioritising other positions. "He’s (Nicolas Jackson) not ready, but I’ve seen some super finishing from him (Christopher Nkunku) last season but I’m not sure where he’s going to play."
